之前提過,比起光明節,猶太小孩還更想要過 聖誕節 。聖誕節是天主教和基督教慶祝耶穌降生的節日,猶太人不相信耶穌,這個名字對他們來說還很刺耳,即便歐美已經把聖誕節商業化成連台灣也過的節日,猶太人仍然是不過聖誕節的。
然而,如果你認為在以色列是不會感受到聖誕節氣氛的話,那可就錯了!
✶ 阿拉伯村莊的聖誕節氣氛
以色列這塊土地上除了猶太人之外,也住著其他的種族,包括一些阿拉伯人,還有幾個人數較少的族群,像是德魯茲人(Druze)、切爾克西亞人(Circassian)等等。
那些住在以色列的阿拉伯人中,有伊斯蘭教徒,也有不少基督徒。像我們kibbutz附近的幾個阿拉伯村莊,就全部住著信仰基督教的阿拉伯人。
十二月時,我去到一個附近的阿拉伯村莊,村子最熱鬧的路上擺了一顆超大的聖誕樹,掛飾華美,街上也能看到一些店家在賣聖誕節的相關商品,雜貨店有賣聖誕裝飾、文具店有賣聖誕卡片、零食店有賣拐杖糖。
阿拉伯村莊的聖誕氣氛感覺並沒有那麼濃厚,這好像也正常,如果整個國家只有極少數人過這個節日的話,似乎也無法太誇張。
像耶路撒冷或伯利恆這種比較多天主教和基督教徒活動的地方,當然也會有一些聖誕節的跡象,不過,整個以色列基本上是不會看到慶祝聖誕節的裝飾。
✶ 真的聖誕樹
Kibbutz的志工來自世界各地,即便住在異鄉,很多人也會試著保持自己文化的傳統,該過的節日、該有的習俗,能做的盡量做。另一方面,kibbutz向來很照顧志工們,想辦法讓我們有家的感覺。
國際志工中,除了我和兩個韓國人之外,其他人都是來自歐美和南非,那些基督教文明的國家。對他們來說,聖誕節不僅是傳統節日,更是一年當中最重要的日子,與家人團聚、歡慶、送禮物這些習俗都不能少。
Kibbutz貼心地讓我們這些遊子在異鄉也能過聖誕節,聖誕夜有廚房為我們準備的聖誕大餐,聖誕節當天不僅放假,還會帶我們出去一日遊。
我們的負責人之一Lori來自美國,她自己就是過聖誕節的人,所以很了解所有聖誕節的文化。
聖誕節前兩個星期,Lori買來一顆聖誕樹和一些聖誕裝飾,我們也從儲藏室裡翻出以前留下來的聖誕燈,一起把客廳佈置了一番。
把裝飾掛上聖誕樹的同時,出現了這樣的對話:
「我們為什麼不用真的樹?」
「我們家都是用真的樹。」
「我們也是,假的看起來好沒有質感。」
「而且還有塑膠的味道,真糟糕!」
幾個歐洲人不僅不感恩我們能有一棵聖誕樹,竟然還抱怨塑膠的樹很醜。
確實,聖誕節前,大部分的歐美人會去砍下一顆真的杉樹,帶回家放上裝飾,當成家裡的聖誕樹,聖誕節過後,那棵樹就與其他的垃圾一起放在房子外面,等著被清潔隊收走。由於他們有這樣的習慣,歐美各地都有聖誕樹農場,那裡種的樹就是專門為了讓人砍回家當聖誕樹的。
想當然,以色列並沒有聖誕樹農場,不過,我們的房子旁邊就有很多針葉樹,所以有人提出了「我們就去外面隨便砍一顆樹回來」的想法。
Lori告訴我們,她自己也更喜歡真的樹,然而,這裡沒有人用真的樹當聖誕樹,因為,在以色列,砍伐樹木是被禁止的,我們不可以隨便去砍一棵回來。
以色列大部分的土地都很乾旱,國家最重視的就是綠化,他們在好多地方大規模的種植樹木。連保護都來不及了,怎麼可能讓人砍下一顆好好的樹來當裝飾,然後一個月後丟掉,這樣的做法在以色列根本就是太浪費啦!
不過,話說回來,這個不能砍樹的法令讓我們覺得很可笑。我們可不是住在沙漠裡,我們是住在雨水豐沛的山上,放眼望去都是樹木,kibbutz的後山更是一整片的森林,就砍一棵也不行嗎?
最後,當然沒有人真的去砍樹,塑膠的樹加上各種裝飾和閃爍的聖誕燈,看起來一樣很有氣氛,我自己已經覺得非常好了。
我想,那些歐洲人也該懂的心存感恩並停止抱怨,他們應該慶幸,住在猶太人的社區當中,還有人在乎他們需要過聖誕節,甚至送來一棵聖誕樹,完全就該為此感到高興。
